Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling or therapy?

There are many different sorts of therapy. People frequently confuse occupational therapy, speech therapy, massage therapy, and physiotherapy because the term “therapist” is extensively used.

Counselling or psychotherapy are alternate terms for mental health therapy. Therapy is a secure, confidential, and non-judgmental setting for people experiencing emotional challenges. Individuals can talk to a qualified professional about their problems and work toward a common objective.

When looking for a therapist, the phrases “therapist,” “counsellor,” and “psychotherapist” are sometimes used interchangeably. The most critical factor is trust. Look for a therapist who you can put your trust in as the quality of your relationship with your therapist will have a significant impact on the result of your therapy.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, professional counsellor and social worker?

Psychiatrist: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with special training in psychiatry. They specialise in preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses. They are trained to differentiate mental health issues from other medical, underlying conditions that could cause psychiatric symptoms. They also monitor the effects of mental illness on other physical present conditions that one may have. A psychiatrist can conduct psychotherapy.

Clinical Psychologist: A psychologist usually has an advanced degree, most commonly in clinical psychology. Psychologists treat mental disorders with psychotherapy; some specialise in psychological testing and evaluation.

Psychotherapist: A psychotherapist uses talk therapy to treat people with emotional problems and mental illnesses. Depending on their degree and speciality, psychotherapists can be psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, or social workers. They can work with individuals, couples, groups, or families.

Professional Counsellor: A counsellor helps you figure out and organise your problems and develop healthy solutions to solve them. They work well with addressing issues you currently face to move forward to a better future.

Social Worker: A social worker works with individuals and families and liaises with various parties in the community on behalf of the client.
